S7E8: Swiped Right and Got Married at Niagara Falls

What do Bumble, shrimp, and Niagara Falls have in common?

This couple's wedding!

This week, we're joined by Lisa, who was married on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls - and somehow managed to include shrimp in her ceremony.

You'll have to listen to find out!

Guest: Lisa Simone Richards

This week, we’re dishing about…

  • shrimp cocktail at the altar

  • the piano guy playing classical Super Mario Brothers while guests were arriving - people were definitely like 'is that...? no....Lisa would never do that.' YES, I did! Ha!

  • hanging out in the bridal suite pre-ceremony watching the guests come in and sharing stories about how we knew them (then texting the guests saying 'you look awesome!' and then confusedly looking around trying to see where we were watching from)

  • Steve's dad's speech - hilarious

  • rapping WAP during the reception while my new in-laws escorted their nine-year-old daughter out (i did warn the family after 10:30 it'd get raunchy)

  • … and more!

How did you two meet?

SWIPED RIGHT 👉 THIS COULD BE FUN...

Lisa's Bumble Bio: Animal lover. I make the *best* shrimp scampi. And I need a dog (or two) yesterday.

Steve's Bumble Bio: Love dogs. Don't ask me to do math. Sarcasm is my superpower.

Sounds about right and like a perfect fit for both of us! We went on our first date on January 13th, 2018 - both armed with creative plans to duck out early-ish if need be. 🤭 (We admitted this to each other two years later.) After lots of playing with (other people's) dogs, eating many delicious foods, minimal math, and a hefty amount of sarcasm later, we made it official!

What was the first thing you noticed about your partner?

The awful Birkenstocks he was wearing in front of the Taj Mahal. I almost swiped left but remembered that shoes can be changed. Once I got past that, I loved his ripped muscles rock climbing!

Tell us about the proposal

!We were on a layover in Paris en route to Egypt for a 10-day vacation. Two of my girlfriends were like 'omg he's totally going to propose' and I was definitely like, 'no, he's not. We haven't even been dating for two years he wouldn't do it this soon.' Surprise! We were at the Eiffel Tower drinking wine we'd taken from the plane and enjoying a stereotypical baguette with brie. While we walked, I got a kink in my shoulder blade and asked him to massage it out for me. While he did that with one hand, the other one was rummaging through his pocket looking for the ring. I was entirely shocked when he got down on one knee, I barely remember what he said, and I definitely said "oh f*ck!" before I said yes!

What, if anything, would you change about the wedding planning process?

Nothing - it was easier. I guess find our invitation supplier earlier but everything worked out fine and relatively stress-free

What, if anything, would you change about your wedding day?

Nothing - it was perfect! truly we were so lucky. great weather, first party anyone had been to in two years and everyone was healthy after the event. success!

Did you participate in any family, cultural, or religious traditions into your wedding?

Nope - our only instruction was do NOT make any religious references at all

What was the planning process like? Did you run into any obstacles? How did you overcome them?

Neither of us wanted to spend a ton of time planning a wedding so thank goodness for our planner Mallory who did all the heavy lifting.

What was the most important decision you made about your wedding?

To be sure we ate. So many couples said 'don't forget to eat on your wedding day' so we did NOT screw around with that. Breakfast in bed the morning of, snacks legit delivered to the altar mid-ceremony, snacks in the bridal suite, forget table visits - I sat and enjoyed the whole meal we paid for LOL. (Food is a huge priority for me if we can't tell yet!)

What is your favorite thing about your significant other?

I love how he remembers the small things One of the first things I shared with him that I wanted in a partner was someone who made me laugh to the point of tears daily and would always teach me new things. Every day he texts me a fact of the day!

Married life…

What’s the best thing that’s happened in your lives since getting married?

I'm not sure I can pinpoint that just yet! (You'll see why in the next question)

What is the most surprising difference about being married vs dating and/or living together?

I also don't know that - we've been married for 8 months and haven't even moved in together yet! We literally got married then went back to our own condos. We're gonna move in next month 😝
