S6E12: An Intimate Elopement, Wedding Jargon, + Bosnian Culture

After a lot of back and forth, an intimate bayside elopement was the right fit for Sani and Zee - and, in the end, they couldn't have been happier.

We're dishing about how this adorable couple met in graduate school in the US, fell in love (after someone flaked repeatedly on planned dates), and got married.

Guest: Sani

This week, we’re dishing about things like…

  • Bosnian culture

  • Elopement planning

  • Wedding jargon (and how vendors often forget that couple’s don’t speak wedding language)

  • The importance of doing what feels right to you

… and LOTS of laughs!

Background Details

How did you two meet?

Graduate school

What was the first thing you noticed about your partner?

Her style, I thought she was so cool with her brown pea coat.

What is your favorite thing about your significant other? And, if there *is* a least fave thing, feel free to share that.

Her ability to know EVERYTHING. I have never met anyone who can talk to everyone from a toddler to a 90-year-old. I don’t understand her brain stores so much information.

I would love it if Zee would stop screaming during soccer games. Specifically, while I’m napping but truly always. She scares/wakes me up. She will yell stuff like, “BRUNO!!! This is why nobody talks about you.”

Tell us about the proposal!

I proposed to Zee at a DC library where we spent 2 years doing graduate school research. I made a book of all the things about us and the last page was asking her to marry me. She had no idea because the deal was that she would propose.

What are the top things that stand out most in your memory about wedding planning?

A couple kissing after their wedding on the beach in Alexandria, VA

I never thought I would be joining a sorority just by planning a wedding. The lingo that gets thrown around is like a sorority. Despite all of that the top thing that stands out is how difficult it was to make the decision of what we wanted to do and not what everyone else wanted to do.

Also, when my wife made us sit through a zoom call with the celebrant so that she can walk her through the ceremony. All three minutes of it.

Tell us about the wedding planning process. Have you run into any obstacles? How did you overcome them?

Everything about this was an obstacle until I met Sara without an h.

We were also super indecisive about pretty much everything. Biggest obstacle was finding a civil celebrant. I cannot tell you how many people I had contacted. One of them told me her whole life story in a 5 min conversation. There I was trying to problem-solve her mother’s high blood pressure and the fact that the dog keeps jumping the baby gate. And after all of that, she said she wasn’t available for our date but can have someone fill in for her.

What was the most important decision you made about your wedding?

TO ELOPE.

What have you learned since you started the wedding planning process?

I learned that bustle is not a word for hustling. It’s a real thing and there are many types.

I also learned that the appropriate response to the end of the ceremony to your partner is I love you and not we did it, Joe.

Out of all seriousness, I learned that your and your partner's happiness is the most important.

What are you most excited about?

Babies.
