S4E16: Loud Laughs and Lots of Love at this Wedding
When you’re a loud laugher and you get married in the mountains, it echos.
When you marry into a boisterous family, your wedding can be heard around the world.
Liz and Shaun got married in Lake Tahoe, CA.
Fun fact: Liz is the producer of my other podcast, Laughing with Gingers — and we’re joined on this episode of The Wedding Dish by my co-host on Laughing with Gingers, who happens to be Liz’s sister-in-law, Kristina!
Elizabeth & Shaun
How did you two meet?I
I was on a first date with his roommate. When my date and I went back to his house to hang out, Shaun walked in, our eyes met and we talked for 30 min by the stair rails. Needless to say, my date was slightly annoyed.
What was the first thing you noticed about your partner?
How cute he was, how blue his eyes were and how strong he looked.
Tell us about the proposal!
We were on a family vacation with his family in Italy. One morning in Florence we rented a scooter before the sun came up to see the sunrise. We rode together on the scooter up the hilly winding roads until we found a beautiful overlook for me to take pictures. There were a few scattered couples along the large terrace, but I knew he wouldn’t propose if there were people around, so I let him lead me to a more private secluded area on his suggestion. I wasn’t sure if he was going to propose on this trip but I was hopeful, so I made sure I followed his lead, I didn’t want to ruin anything lol. We watch the sun go up and just as I thought we were leaving, and he wasn’t going to propose he started telling me about our wonderful journey together and asked me if I would like to continue it with him. He held out a ring in his trembling hand and waited for my answer. Of course, I said yes, but I always give him a hard time about not getting down on one knee and not saying the words "will you marry me" lol

What were your top 5 favorite moments from your wedding?
His vows
The tears in his eyes as he said his vows (he never ever cries)
It snowed the night before the wedding
His Dad marrying us
How simple it was
What, if anything, would you change about the wedding planning process?
Everything was pretty easy
What, if anything, would you change about your wedding day?
A different photographer, the snow scared our photographer and I didn’t get an outdoor shoot that I desperately wanted
Did you participate in any family, cultural, or religious traditions in your wedding?
We used a white lasso, wrap in white flowers, that is shaped like an 8. It is draped around both people during the ceremony. It was the same lasso that my Mother used and her Mother used when they got married.
What was the planning process like? Did you run into any obstacles? How did you overcome them?
We talked about eloping because we both don’t like to be the center of attention, but settled pretty quickly on a small wedding to make sure our closest family was part of our special day.
What was the most important decision you made about your wedding?
Keeping it small.
What is your favorite thing about your significant other? And, if there *is* a least fave thing, feel free to share that, but let's keep it light. ;) For example, Sara's husband would love it if she stopped burning everything she puts in the toaster oven, but he loves her anyway LOL
His patience, he is the most patient man I have ever met or dated. I am often running around with my head cut off and he always seems to calm me down.
I also equally hate that about him, because he just won’t speed things up and run around with his head cut off with me. I mean he needs to hurry up man. He has learned to move faster now that we have a daughter.
What’s the best thing that’s happened in your lives since getting married?
There is not one thing specifically, aside from my daughter and all the laughter she has brought to our lives. I would say our ability to always dive deeper into our relationship, the ability to always be able to talk our differences out. The safe space that we have created for each other within our relationship, we can tell each other anything!
What is the most surprising difference between being married vs living together?
Talking and planning to have kids, and you know actually trying to have kids. The actually getting pregnant and having a kid all the shenanigans.
Have something else to share? A funny story? Something crazy that happened?
Well, you know the guy I was on my first date with, well I ended up dating him for 2 years. Then broke up with him to start dating Shaun ....
