S6E2: Do You Need a Tent for Your Wedding?

There are a lot of logistics that go into wedding planning - and rentals are no exception.

Even if a tent is your "plan B", you need to reserve it in advance or you might be out of luck.

Adam The Tent Guy from Tent-All Rent-All is answering all of our questions. From tent size to table size to which type of tent is best for which season (and even time of day!).

Guest: Adam, Tent-All Rent-All + The Tent Guy

Background

How long have you been in business? 17 years

What areas do you serve? Central New York (Upstate - some people think Central New York means the center of NYC)

Why did you decide to start your own business?

I worked for rental companies and saw the potential of owning my own.

What's the coolest thing about owning your own business?

I get to see places and properties that I would not otherwise be able to see. We saw an entire fake town built for city warfare training before. Also, I get to work for myself and employ people I like.

What is a topic that you feel you could offer a unique perspective in?

For the wedding couple looking to get rentals:

  • how the process works

  • how a good company will handle the process

  • what questions to ask

  • what expectations to have

  • what expectations a reputable company will have

  • how soon to start the process

Wedding planner acting as the intermediary:

  • how to handle the relationship

  • when to start asking for discounts on rental items

  • how to best navigate the relationship

  • what the rental companies’ expectations are

An entrepreneur-curious person looking to start doing wedding rentals:

  • don't buy what you think is cool

  • buy what goes out

  • logistics of the business

  • customer interactions

Do you have a story to share?

Showing up to barn venues at night to pick up equipment and the being fights between the wedding and the barn owners trying to get them out because they are wedding mill, and they have a wedding the next day. Dealing with wedding planners who just can't plan is really frustrating.

What challenges have you had to overcome?

Not over-extending. realizing that all the fancy stuff, though cool, is not what makes money.

What's the craziest thing you've seen happen at a wedding?

Bride crying, party fighting because they paid so much but getting yelled at to leave. I hate wedding mills.
