S1 Ep 9 | Spooooooky Halloween Weddings šŸ§

Hi ladies!

I have a question for you...more than a story. What do you think of Halloween weddings? Are they terrifyingly tacky or can they be cute? I met my fiance on Halloween and I'd like to incorporate some of the Halloween theme without overdoing it and making my wedding cheezy. Thanks for your help!

Subject line: Crawford Road in Yorktown, VA: The Wedding that Went Wrong

Yorktown, VA, has an infamous road known to put fear into the hearts of locals, Crawford Road. You would think itā€™s known for featuring a beautifully elaborated landscape or because it has breath-taking historical architecture.

But, no.

Apparently, Crawford Road is extremely haunted. Locals go out of their way to avoid the route. Most people do not dare take the road at night.

The creepiest part? Driving under the bridge.

Probably one of the most popular accounts surrounding Crawford Road is the wedding story.

Countless tell the same plot:

Years ago, a wedding took place near the bridge. By most accounts, she was not a happy bride and it was an overall bad situation ā€” sounds like the dude was a real asshole and she was really not into him or his bad behavior.

So, she said ā€œeff thisā€ and hung herself from the bridge.

Evidently, her body can still be seen hanging from the bridge by those unlucky enough to be at the bridge at the wrong time.

One story comes from a local woman is who was driving under the bridge a few years ago:

As she was beginning to pass under the bridge she saw a lady dressed in a white gown, standing at the top of the bridge looking over the edge at her. After she drove below the bridge, the driver looked back. She saw the lady walking onto the ledge and jumping.

She obviously expected someone to hit the ground, but nothing happened, so she looked up. The lady had stopped in mid-air, swaying ā€” thereā€™s no account of the rope, so she may have been floatingā€¦ who really knows.

Annnnyway, Iā€™ve personally never seen anything there, but I thought this was super spooky and wanted to share it with you ladies. Love the podcast! Keep dishing and donā€™t drive near Crawford Road ā€” or force a gal to marry a real dick, Sam

Check out photos here.

I have always wanted to wear a black dress for my wedding but I definitely DON'T want it to scream goth, Halloween or Elvira. What is the best way to do a black wedding dress that comes off sophisticated and not spooky?

Subject Line: Halloween Proposal Story

Hi Sara,

Here is my Halloween proposal story - I added a little context about our relationship at the beginning. Happy to cut it down if it's too long or anything. Hope this works for ya! Thanks!!!

My partner and I started off with a New York City meet-cute story

We met on the subway due to a delayed train; I, a girl with a dead cell phone on the way home from a Lorde concert and he, a charismatic Brooklyn native who struck up a conversation with me as we waited for our train

Within a few days we were on our first date and have been inseparable ever since

We moved in together in July and had started talking about engagements and marriage, but he had left me with the impression that this would be something happening later this year or next

Flash forward to the beginning of Halloweekend - last Friday - and we have tickets to a Halloween event at the New York Public Library at Bryant Park

For context, my favorite things in the world (other than my cat) are books and Halloween

So, I'm excited about this event but it's also a Friday night after work and I'm tired and not feeling 100% in the party mood

But my partner insisted that we have to go to this event, so I'm reluctantly changing into my Little Red Riding Hood costume in my work bathroom before leaving to meet him, The Big Bad Wolf, and walk over to the event

He had also invited my sister who was meeting us there with her friend, which I didn't think anything of at the time

We get there and meet up with my sister and I ask her to take a few photos of us on the steps in front of the library

Then, we move over to a different part of the steps and suddenly my partner is getting on one knee!!

We fake propose to each other all the time so I had to ask, "Is this real?" and then I saw that his photographer friend was there taking our photos and this was indeed real!

Of course I said yes and we went into the party and enjoyed the rest of our night

Turns out my sister was in on it all along and had provided the placeholder ring, borrowed from the costume shop she works at. The real ring will come in a few weeks but he just couldn't pass up the opportunity to propose to me in Halloween costumes outside of a library

We're super excited about our spooky proposal and Halloween just happens to fall on a Saturday next year so we might have to take advantage of that, too!!

xoxo

Haunted Wedding Venues in DC

Sources: lovetoknow.com, brides.com

The Octagon House, Washington, D.C

This unique building holds a whole lot of history:

  • it served a temporary White House for the Madisons during the War of 1812

  • a girls school after its owners (the Tayloe family) moved out in 1855

  • the offices of the US Hydrographic Office

  • a tenement apartment building

  • national headquarters of the American Institute of Architects

Many people claim the Octagon House is the most haunted place in Washington, DC. Both daughters of Colonel John Tayloe II fell to their deaths from the spiral staircase. It's believed their ghosts haunt the premises.

Some spooky reports include:

  • Ghosts climbing up the staircase

  • Bloodcurdling female screams

  • Bells ringing vigorously on their own

  • Lighted candles floating down the staircase

  • Ghost of dead woman's crumpled body at foot of staircase

  • Carpets rolling back unassisted

  • Footsteps on a closed off third floor

  • And, footprints left in the dust

  • Doors opening on their own

  • Lights turning on after the propertyā€™s superintendent turned them off

  • Chandeliers swinging

  • Ghost of one-time resident Dolly Madison

Today, it can also serve as your wedding venue, but be warned: it's thought to be one of the most haunted spots in DC.

National Building Museum, 401 F Street

Formerly known as the Pension Building, the National Building Museum is a National Historic Landmark and is said to be haunted by very unusual ghosts

  • The main hall is haunted by a woman dressed in white

  • A man on horseback rides along the upper floors

  • Strange noises

  • Objects go missing then reappear in odd places

  • Column colors morph into dead people connected to the building

  • The spirit of James Tanner, the stenographer for Lincoln assassination witness testimonies, roams the floors

Other notable haunted places:

  • Lafayette Square: Andrew Jackson's ghost is said to roam the square, along with Francis Scott Key's son, Phillip Barton Key II. Key was shot by Daniel Sickles in retaliation of Key's affair with Sickles's wife

  • Library of Congress: A resident ghost is said to claim a specific seat in the main reading room. Anyone unlucky enough to sit there will either become too cold or too hot

  • Capitol Building: The Capitol Building is said to be haunted by Senators and Representatives, a demon cat, John Quincy Adams' disembodied voice, and other paranormal activities

  • Congressional Cemetery: Ghosts are reported throughout the 65,000 gravesites in the Congressional Cemetery. Many deceased Congressmen have been seen as well as the spirit of Marine composer John Philip Sousa playing his tuba, dubbed the sousaphone
